About Cocomotion
Multidisplinary artist from NYC Christina CocoMotion Smith is a native New Yorker. Her roots in the artistic community expand in dance and photographer. CocoMotion is the founder and artistic/founder of NuTribe Dance Company. She is committed to the exploration and expansion of street and club styles, including: waacking, hip hop and krump. Her overall mission is to pay homage to her culture as a dancer of the Black diaspora.
As a company her work focuses on addressing issues including under representation and microaggressions, while communicating our lived experiences through the medium of street dance.
As an educator she works as a teaching artist, an adjunct professor and is launching her own afterschool program FreshXpressions Art Hub in the Fall of 2026.
As a performer Coco’s recent TV appearances include Season 5 episode 4 of the PBS series “Bare Feet with Michela Mallozzi” and a commercial for the brand Bacardi. Her concert venue appearances include: The Park Avenue Armory, The New Victory Theater, The Guggenheim Museum, SummerStage at Central Park and The Apollo Theater.
As a choreographer she is credited with productions at “Dick Rivington and Tommy the Cat” at Abrons Arts Center, “Grand Panorama” La Mama and a residency for the Downtown Brooklyn. She is a recent graduate of Hunter College with a M.A in Dance Education.
She is a grant recipient of the City Artist Grant and the JCAL June 2022 grant. In addition to receiving the Movement Research Parent Grant in 2023 and the GALLIM moving artist parent grant of 2024.
