About Cocomotion

Dancer, choreographer and New York native. Christina Smith better known as CocoMotion is the founder and artistic/founder of NuTribe Dance Company. She is committed to the exploration and expansion of street and club styles, including: waacking, hip hop and krump. Her overall mission is to pay homage to her culture as a dancer of the Black diaspora.

As a company her work focuses on addressing issues including under representation and microaggressions, while communicating our lived experiences through the medium of street dance. 

As a performer Coco’s TV appearances include Season 5 episode 4 of the PBS series  “Bare Feet with Michela Mallozzi” and a commercial for the brand Bacardi.  Her concert venue appearances include: The Park Avenue Armory, The New Victory Theater, The Guggenheim Museum, SummerStage at Central Park and The Apollo Theater.

As a choreographer she is credited with productions at “Dick Rivington and Tommy the Cat” at Abrons Arts Center and “Grand Panorama” La Mama. She is a recent graduate of Hunter College with a M.A in Dance Education.

She is a grant recipient of the City Artist Grant and the JCAL June 2022 grant.
