Package for Colleges and Universities: Whacking as a Semester Course or Workshop

Overview This package is designed for colleges and universities interested in offering whacking (a stylized street dance form) as a semester-long course or a short-format workshop. It presents curriculum options, learning outcomes, staffing and facility needs, assessment approaches, scheduling models, and sample syllabi. Materials are adaptable for academic credit, elective offerings, community education, or student clubs.

  • Understand historical and cultural context: origins, evolution, and influence within dance and LGBTQ+ communities.

  • Build performance skills: musicality, timing, spatial awareness, and improvisation.

  • Cultivate freestyle skills: phrase writing, composition, and group structures.

  • Foster safe practice: injury prevention, warm-ups, and inclusive class environments.

  • Critically engage: viewing, discussing, and reflecting on whacking in broader cultural and artistic contexts.
